Visa is making big changes to the rates that merchants pay to use their cards; the interchange rates will now go up or down depending on the merchant with higher rates going to e-commerce sites while retailers in certain areas will have their fees decreased; a document from Visa reads, “The U.S. credit interchange structure has been largely unchanged for the past 10 years…Based on the most recent review in the U.S., Visa is adjusting its default U.S. interchange rate structure to optimize acceptance and usage and reflect the current value of Visa products.” The new rates will be released in April and October which Visa says will give processors more time to implement the changes; American Banker shares more details of the changes coming this year with specific examples of fees charged.
